DELF, DALF, TCF: Examination and Centers in Paris

A short guide on these exams, and all the centers in Paris

DELF/DALF

Both these tests are state diplomas, the difference between them is that the DELF is directed towards A1 to B2 (from elementary speaker to upper intermediate), whereas the DALF is designed for C1 to C2, which are the highest levels. During these tests the candidates will be evaluated on their oral and written comprehension, as well as their written and oral production. These diplomas once received are valid for life, and are recognized internationally.

There are a few different DELFs which have diverse purposes. There is the DELF junior, DELF scolaire, and DELF Prim which are for underaged applicants. The DELF tout public is intended for adults and finally, the DELF pro is for those who wish to work in France. Depending on the level you are going for, the exam will last from one to four hours. The examination can be taken as many times as one wishes. For application, the candidate has to go to one of the examination centers, it cannot be done online.

TCF

This exam enables the candidate to find out which level is his, from A1 (elementary) to    C2 (upper advanced level). It is composed of four tests: oral comprehension, written comprehension, structure of language, and written expression. Depending on what your goal is by passing this exam (TCF), you will have different tests to pass.  Moreover, this test can be passed as many times as the candidate wants, keeping 30 days between each exam. At the end of this exam, you will find out more about your ability to speak and understand French, and walk out with a diploma that will be useful in France and other countries.

However, there are several specific TCF exams. The TCF DAP is the one made for people who want to study in colleges in France. The TCF ANF is conceived for foreigners who wish to acquire the French nationality, there is also a TCF resident for obtaining the French resident card. Furthermore, there exists TCF Canada and Quebec to settle in these locations.

How to choose between them?

If you have come to France to study, and plan on getting a bachelor degree (the equivalent of a French Licence), you will have to go towards the TCF, which is requested by colleges. If you plan on obtaining the French nationality, the TCF is also the one that you will need. However, if you already feel like you know your French skills, the DELF and DALF validate your level and can be useful to put on your resume, or to seek work in France. In order to prepare for both exams, trainings are available online on the official websites of these tests.
